UrbanTrekkers Visit Alabama on Civil Rights Tour

IMG_0097.JPG

In January our UrbanTrekkers group embarked on their second Trek of the year!

This Trek, thoughtfully planned during the week of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, was a historical journey through the state of Alabama. With a focus on Civil Rights, students had an opportunity to visit several landmarks in Montgomery and in Selma.

In Montgomery the group made a stop at Dexter Avenue Church where Dr. King pastored from 1954-1960. Students had a chance to hear from Wanda, a tour guide who attends the church, and stand where Dr. King preached and organized.

I stood in awe of the reality that this was the place where [Dr. King] came to prominence by serving this church. And even more so in awe of the folks who sat in the pews, many of whom still attend, and were motivated to action, sacrifice and love.

“My favorite moments were when we would eat together. I feel like we had the best conversations when we were all eating together.”
— Brianna, StreetLeader

Also in Montgomery the group had a chance to visit The Legacy Museum and The Lynching Memorial. After a heavy day, they spent intentional time conversing and reflecting on our nation’s history, how it impacts our lives today, and how we can seek a more just and equitable future together.

To round out the experience, the Trekkers had an opportunity to visit the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma with Dianne, a very special tour guide who, in 1965, was a 15-year-old “foot soldier” actively involved in the resistance centered there.

Dianne was in the back of the line that attempted to march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge on “Bloody Sunday” (March 7, 1965) but never stepped foot on the bridge due to the “blue wall”.

She and her younger brother were chased all the way up the steps of Brown AME church about a mile down the road after trying to help an older woman escape the terror of the deputies, but to no avail. The older lady told them to run ahead of her as she wasn’t going to make it back to the church. They turned back to see her being clubbed by a deputy on horseback, who then proceeded to chase them all the way up the church steps.

Thankfully she is still here to lead tours and tell her story and the story of so many other courageous and fearless people who were willing to face even death for what was right and just.

Many of our StreetLeaders reflected on how she was just a teenager — their age! — during her powerful, courageous experience.

I liked the day in Selma because we saw and heard Dianne’s perspective on Bloody Sunday from her own life experiences.
— Jared, StreetLeader
My favorite moments on the Trek were when I got to hangout with Wanda, Dianne, and my roommates. They reminded me to be free and that God has everything in control.
— Aileen, StreetLeader

Thank you so much to our UrbanPromise supporters who help make trips like this possible for our students! This experience was one that students, staff, and volunteers will certainly carry with them moving forward.

Our time in Montgomery and Selma was rich, inspiring, deeply troubling and hopeful all at once. At each stop on our tour, I was struck by the courage of everyday people as they stood up for what was right and implored the world to pay attention.

Promise Breakfast 2019

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who made time to attend UrbanPromise Charlotte’s fifth annual Promise Breakfast on Friday, November 1st! It was a packed house with over 330 attendees… and our StreetLeader and student speakers did not disappoint!

If you were not able to attend, you can view individual videos of each moment from the event below. If you’re inspired by the resilience, courage, and leadership of our students, we invite you to consider supporting them by donating to UrbanPromise!

Thank you to everyone who makes the UrbanPromise community possible for students… we could not do this without your generosity and support!

UrbanTrekkers Charlotte Officially Launches with First Trek!

Our first official UrbanTrekkers Charlotte expedition took place last weekend, and we are excited to announce that it was a huge success!

An initial cohort of 12 StreetLeader Trekkers have committed to participating in the UrbanTrekkers Program during the 2019-2020 school year, which seeks to complement UrbanPromise’s highly successful academic initiatives with outside expeditionary learning opportunities. In addition to embarking on several multi-day trips together, this cohort will help organize and plan other local trips for their 85+ StreetLeader peers to join throughout the year!

The group’s inaugural Trek was to Blowing Rock, North Carolina. Students experienced an array of outdoor adventure activities while learning to connect with both God and one another through intentional exploration. Our Trekkers completed a zipline course made up of 10 cable runs through the beautiful mountain scenery (including one run that was over 1,400 feet long and suspended 300 feet above the ground!). StreetLeaders also hiked nearly seven miles through Grandfather Mountain State Park, experiencing scenic views of the Appalachian Mountains and gorgeous fall foliage while climbing over 1,000 feet in elevation over the course of the hike. At the end of each day, we led our students through a reflection time and helped them connect their experiences with valuable lessons centered around growing in their faith, trusting in their community and demonstrating courage by overcoming their fears. It was a fantastic experience for them!

Thank you to everyone who has supported the launch of UrbanTrekkers this year! We are excited to see how the students in the cohort will learn and grow as leaders through the experience.

UP Students Average 3.2 Months of Reading Growth at 2019 Summer Camp!

UrbanPromise Summer Camp 2019 is officially in the books, and we had a great summer learning, growing, and having fun together!

During a camp wrap-up meeting at the end of the final week, our UP Literacy Facilitator, Christine, was sharing some of the reading achievement results of our students with the StreetLeaders at our South Boulevard Site. When she shared that one of our campers, Jahir, grew a phenomenal 9.7 months this summer in his reading ability, the StreetLeader who had been working with him, Anner, exploded with praise in front of the group...

"That's MY kid! That's MY kid!"

This is part of what makes UrbanPromise so special! The bonds our StreetLeaders and students form often go way beyond the typical camper/counselor dynamic, because the continuity of our UrbanPromise programming makes it possible for relationships to strengthen and deepen all year around.

We are excited to announce that, across all three of our UrbanPromise sites, our students grew an average of 3.2 months during this year’s six-week Summer Camp!*

Research tells us that the average student LOSES a month of reading achievement during that time; for students from economically-disadvantaged backgrounds, this “summer slide” learning regression increases to two to three months of loss [3]. We are proud of our campers for “breaking the script” and showing so much growth this summer! Way to go, UP students!

*UrbanPromise uses the iReady assessment tool to track and record student reading data.

THANK YOU TO OUR GENEROUS PARTNERS & SUPPORTERS FOR HELPING TO MAKE URBANPROMISE’S 2019 SUMMER CAMP POSSIBLE!

Senior Signing Day 2019

IMG_1163.jpg

Over the last four years, 40 of UrbanPromise’s senior StreetLeaders have graduated from high school. In 2019 alone, we saw 28 more StreetLeaders graduate… 100% on-time and 100% receiving college acceptance!

Senior Signing Day is truly one of the most special events at UP, as senior StreetLeaders get to reveal their college decisions and accomplishments in front of family, friends, and the UrbanPromise community. Way to go, UP class of 2019!
