Volunteer opportunities

We love when your personal passions and skills intersect with our volunteer needs at UrbanPromise! If you’re interested in sharing your time with our students, we invite you to take a look at the opportunities we offer for volunteering below. These opportunities are available at all four of our sites.

  • Homework Tutor: Work alongside 1-2 StreetLeaders in a classroom to assist students with assignments during their homework block. This opportunity is perfect for someone who wants to get to know a handful of students (8-10 to a room) as well as a couple of StreetLeaders!
Slots are available on Mondays or Tuesdays from 4:15-6:15PM (chose to volunteer for one hour or two).
We ask volunteers to commit to the same day/time each week, for at least one semester.

  • Reading Buddy: Become a designated reading buddy for 1-2 students who could use some extra support! Read together, ask questions during reading sessions, and help students feel more confident in their literacy skills by encouraging them. No experience required!
Slots are available Monday-Thursday from 4:15-6:15PM (chose to volunteer for one hour or two).
We ask volunteers to commit to the same day/time each week, for at least one semester.

  • HELPS Reading Tutor: As a trained HELPS tutor, you will use the scripted, structured HELPS curriculum to work one-on-one with 2-3 students to help them improve their reading fluency — a critical (but often ignored) reading skill! This opportunity requires that volunteers attend a 3-hour HELPS training with READ Charlotte prior to plugging in at UP. Learn more about HELPS here.
Slots are available Monday-Thursday from 4:15-6:15PM (chose to volunteer for one hour or two).
We ask volunteers to commit to the same day/time each week, for at least one semester.

  • “Options” Teachers: During our AfterSchool Program, students have the opportunity to choose an “Options Class” to attend where they will develop a life skill that they might otherwise not have the chance to learn. Possible skills might include cooking, fitness, gardening, dance, art, music, or LEGO robotics. An “Options Teacher” volunteers to design and implement a 10-week course around a skill of her/his choice.
Options classes take place on Wednesdays from 5:15 – 6:15 PM. We ask volunteers to commit to implementing a 10-week class.
