UrbanPromise Summer Camp 2019 is officially in the books, and we had a great summer learning, growing, and having fun together!

During a camp wrap-up meeting at the end of the final week, our UP Literacy Facilitator, Christine, was sharing some of the reading achievement results of our students with the StreetLeaders at our South Boulevard Site. When she shared that one of our campers, Jahir, grew a phenomenal 9.7 months this summer in his reading ability, the StreetLeader who had been working with him, Anner, exploded with praise in front of the group...

"That's MY kid! That's MY kid!"

This is part of what makes UrbanPromise so special! The bonds our StreetLeaders and students form often go way beyond the typical camper/counselor dynamic, because the continuity of our UrbanPromise programming makes it possible for relationships to strengthen and deepen all year around.

We are excited to announce that, across all three of our UrbanPromise sites, our students grew an average of 3.2 months during this year’s six-week Summer Camp!*

Research tells us that the average student LOSES a month of reading achievement during that time; for students from economically-disadvantaged backgrounds, this “summer slide” learning regression increases to two to three months of loss [3]. We are proud of our campers for “breaking the script” and showing so much growth this summer! Way to go, UP students!

*UrbanPromise uses the iReady assessment tool to track and record student reading data.
